Depeche Mode Tribute

 

Depeche Mode’s twelfth studio album, Sounds Of the Universe (Mute) will be released on April 21st. Alongside a standard CD format, Depeche Mode has announced that Sounds Of The Universe will also be released as a Special Edition CD/DVD and a Deluxe Box Set that will include a host of exclusive material:

• Three CDs containing the album, bonus songs and remixes, as well as 14 demos available exclusively - a career first for Depeche Mode.
• A DVD that will feature three films: Making The Universe, a behind-the scenes documentary about the recording of the album, “Usual Thing”, “Try And Get The Question In The Answer” (a conversation with the band discussing recording techniques, intercut with personal archive footage from previous album sessions) and “Sounds Of The Universe” (a short film featuring track by track with the band). The DVD will also include the promo video for the album’s first single “Wrong” (directed by Patrick Daughters), plus four songs filmed live in the studio in December 2008 and a version of the album the album mixed in DTS 5.1 surround sound
• Two 84-page hardback books, one featuring the lyrics to all the songs from the Sounds Of The Universe sessions, accompanied by exclusive photography by Anton Corbijn. The second book will contain exclusive and candid studio photography by Daniel Miller, Ben Hillier, Luke Smith and Ferg Peterkin.

In addition, the album will also be released as a double vinyl LP (including a “Sounds Of The Universe” CD) and as a download.

The cover art of the upcoming Depeche Mode single “Wrong” is quite… wrong. That is at least what fans have been saying on the well known Depeche fan mailing list Bong. Here are some samples of what the single cover artwork (again designed by Anton Corbijn) evoked on there:

• “To me it looks like cigarettes in an ashtray…”
• “It’s really awful… Maybe the worst cover I have seen in DM history ever. I would have done that in PowerPoint (not eve Photoshop or something like that) in less than 5 minutes.”
• “Wow, that really sucks. Anton’s never been a typographic whiz, but… really? (…) Did Daniel Miller give the order to not even try or something?”
• …

It’s not the first time that Corbijn’s current creativity gets questioned by the black swarm. So what do you think of the cover artwork? Let us know ! “Wrong” is the first single from Depeche Mode’s twelfth studio album “Sounds Of The Universe” and will be released on April 6th, 2009 (April 7th in North America). The world premiere of “Wrong” will be on the Echo Awards television show in Germany on February 21st. In related news, it’s possible that the band will once again be working with Live Here Now in order to get ‘official bootlegs’ released from the tour. More news as we get it confirmed. Oh, and here is already a pastiche on the cover artwork…

Unconfirmed but it ended up in our mailbox a few days ago. The upcoming Depeche Mode album “Sound Of the universe” will be released in 3 different formats: a regular audio CD with 13 new tracks (with the Japanese edition having a bonus track); a special edition holding the CD and an extra DVD including the 15 minute EPK, the 5.1 mix of the album and 2 mixes; a deluxe box set which is said to be including 2 audio CDs (including 5 extra songs and 5 demos), an extra DVD and 2 books in hardcover. 

The details of the boxset - which is ‘rumoured’ to be sold for roughly € 80 and which is ’supposed’ to be released a few weeks after the 2 other formats - are still unclear. What we got in our mailbox seems a bit too good to be true, so we will refrain from posting it until we get a confirmation.

It didn’t go as fast as with “Precious”, but 2 months before the new Depeche Mode single is officially to hit the shops, “Wrong” is now out on the (illegal) digital streets. Well, that is if you are to believe the various torrent sites. Side-Line tested a dozen of them to see if what was offered was really the new single. And the good news, it wasn’t. Once downloaded you get either a bunch of Fonzy Bear songs, a mix of Depeche Mode and Enya tracks or even children songs. A prank from fans or from some more official corners? Who knows. Sure is that we had all a nice laugh. 

However… social networks such as Facebook seem to have become a safe haven for spreading correct links to other fans. In the past few days Side-Line received several links to go and download true promo downloads of several album and non album tracks. 

“Wrong” will be Depeche Mode’s first single from their upcoming 12th studio album, “Sounds of the Universe”, and their 46th UK single overall. It is scheduled to hit the radio in February 2009, and sees a physical release on April 6. A music video for the song was shot by Patrick Daughters in December 2008. The new single will officially debut on 21 February, 2009, at the Echo Awards in Germany.
